A study of lighting and shadows..

Welcome to my portfolio showcasing my project on lighting and shadows in rooms. This project lasted a week and was a fascinating exploration of the role of lighting and shadows in architecture. In the first half of the week, we received lectures on the use of lighting and shadows by renowned designers and architects. We also learned about an artist named James Turrell, who is famous for creating exhibitions and rooms with colorful lighting that evoke unique experiences.

Inspired by Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist known for her colorful artwork and mirror illusions, I set out to create special rooms using lighting, shadows, and photography. The project challenged us to experiment with everything we had learned and to create rooms that were both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective.

I was particularly inspired by the beauty of trees and decided to create two rooms that were inspired by them. Initially, I created three rooms inspired by the three main forms: the square, the triangle, and the circle. Experimenting with the shapes, I created unique rooms that allowed me to start exploring what to do with them.

The process

One of the rooms I designed was a fairly small but tall room that expanded towards the ceiling. I cut out many small triangles to symbolize falling leaves, creating a beautiful effect that captured the essence of autumn. For the other square room, I decided to cut lightning or branch-like shapes into the walls and used mirrors facing each other to create an optical illusion. The illusion made it seem like this hallway with this branch-like pattern goes on forever.

Overall, this project was a very inspiring experience that reinforced the importance of lighting and openings in architecture to create beautiful rooms. Below I have two separate galleries for the two rooms in question, “The Forever branches” and “Falling Leaves”…
